| South America is the fourth largest continent surrounded by the Caribbean Sea to the northwest and north, the Atlantic Ocean to the northeast, east, and southeast, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. North America is connected to South America by the Isthmus of Panama, which forms a land bridge whereas the Drake Passage, south of Cape Horn, separates South America from Antarctica. The south America continent is divided into 12 independent countries Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela and 2 overseas political units. This continent has the famous Amazon River and surrounding basin which is the largest tropical rain forest in the world and then the Andes Mountains, stretching on the entire length of the continent. South America is known to be the continent which forms the southern portion of the American landmass. |
